Top 3 April Fool's Pranks

My top 3 April Fool's Pranks

Countdown!

3.  Trick 'em with food! Ask your students if they want some ice cream.  They say yes: you scream!  Well that wasn't nice so share some brownies.  Check out Teaching In The Tongass Freebie:
2.  Post a "Please Use Other Door" sign on your office door.  Obviously this will only work if you have one door like me.  I am excited to peek out my door to see staff and students pause at my door.  Grab your free sign HERE.
1.  Challenge your students to an eye-hand coordination test.  You'll need a quarter, pencil, and paper for this trick.  Ask your students to firmly trace a quarter with a pencil to make a circle on the page.  Students need to roll the quarter down their face from their forehead to chin and try to drop the quarter in the circle.  Wait until your students look up to see everyone's face covered in pencil marks, including their own!
Here's my good sport daughter who agreed to let me post this pix.  In turn I had to agree to help her trick her sisters on Wednesday.

I'm a sucker for holiday and seasonal idioms.  Here's a list of April Fool's Idioms that I'll post on my board and review.
  • Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
  • A fool and his money are soon parted.
  • Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
  • A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.
  • Fool’s paradise or Fool's gold.
Check out my post from last year HERE for another idea with a freebie.

Life's a Beach ~Cabin Fever Freebie!

It's cabin fever week at my school and I went all out with my speech room luau!  Complete with  Hawaiian music, island food and festive decor, my office made quite the splash.  It was a treat to see the reactions of my students as they showed up for their sessions!
I found pomegranate coconut juice and offered healthy snacks of pineapple and watermelon.  Many of my kids tried the fruits for the first time and even ventured out to sample the macaroons.

Beach balls were bouncing, shades and leis were donned, but no current party would be compete without photo props.

I contacted Linda from Love the Day and she gave me permission to share her way cool Photo Booth props.  I look forward to sharing my students' pix with their parents at our open house this week.
Students worked on summertime games and activities while relaxing in their lounge chairs.
It's funny how mixing it up a bit can really cheer everyone up and help with the hum-drum of the same ol'.  If you're sick of feeling stir crazy with cabin fever shake it up with a luau!

Time for the FREEBIE!  If you haven't tried language logic tasks with your students, you're in for a treat.  I made a cabin fever themed logic puzzle for you to enjoy.

Favorite Blog Posts from February

I'm participating in Old School Speech's linky party to highlight some of my favorite February posts.
Sublime Speech was honest in her post "What I learned about that parent."  It highlights the importance of putting aside self and opening up our minds to being good listeners and better clinicians.
 HERE
Mia, from Putting Word in Your Mouth, linked up with my Creative Storage linky party to highlight some of her storage ideas.  This is a fun post that shows a bit of my buddy's wild personality.
 HERE
Nicole Allison, from Speech Peeps, expresses that it's time to be clear and honest about our employment with our high school students. I appreciate this perspective, especially in our world today as jobs become harder to find.
And for a great series on dyslexia, check out Tatiana's (Smart Speech Therapy LLC) posts. This three part series covers an array about the often confusing topic of reading disabilities.
HERE.
You can't go wrong grabbing a cup of coffee and reading Old School Speech's  blog for tips, app reviews, and fantastic products.

Helping hands! Card holder creations.

Years ago my co-worker made these fabulous and functional card holders for my students.  I needed more for larger groups and since I'm no carpenter, I decided to find some alternatives.
In this image, students are playing an inferencing game from  Tie Dye Language
Duct Tape
My child is obsessed with duct tape wallets.  She's made one for every family member and is moving on to her classmates. It was no surprise to me that she found this great use for the wallets.
Pool Noodles
I love this one since it's inexpensive and so simple to make.  I could make 6 card holders with just one $1 noodle!

Snapping Blocks
These are so popular!  This simple arrangement was made by snapping together two lines which formed a natural slot to hold up the cards.
Or you could have your critical thinkers create something a bit more elaborate like this one.

Check out Allison's blog at No Time For Flashcards for these fantastic ideas using everyday household items.
I would love for you to share your helping hands ideas.  Feel free to share on my Instagram and Facebook page!

Top Hits Figurative Language FREEBIE for upper grades

I don't think I've ever used the expression it's raining cats and dogs, but I have told my students to "shake it off!"  My middle schoolers LOVE pop music and think it's really cool to learn language through song lyrics.  I decided to share what has been successful in my room by creating a product with the latest hits for you.
Top Hits uses today's pop music to explore figurative language.

Multi-Model Approach
You may find it helpful for students to read the full song lyrics and watch music videos prior to using the cards.  Be sure to preview videos for appropriateness and search edited lyrics as needed.
