Earth Day Ideas

This is an Earth Day middle school project lead by our special educators.

Hey all,  I was trying to complete a freebie for you but just couldn't seem to get it all together during this crazy time of year.  Instead I'll share with you how I'm celebrating Earth Day with my students.
I'm so proud to be a part of a school that values recycling.

1. Outside: We are taking services outside to green up.

a.  EET students will be donning the medical gloves to pick up trash and describe their finds.

b.  Social skills groups will learn how to add some mindfulness strategies to their bag of tools by using sense meditation.  Students will experience the sense of walking, sounds of nature, and feeling of the outdoors.

c.  Articulation students will search for their sound in the great outdoors.

2.  Touring the Building: I work at an amazing school that focuses on reducing, reusing, and recycling.   We have a full composting program which has tremendously reduced our landfill contribution.  You won't see more than one bag of garbage each day in our cafeteria which serves almost 400 students!  We also have filtered water fountains throughout our school.  Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles to school to fill up.   My students will tour the building in search of ways that our school celebrates Earth Day every day, and they will sequence their thoughts and language by writing a paragraph about their finds.

3.  Figurative Language:  You know I'm all about the themed idioms!  Here are 10 idioms that I plan to teach that pair nicely with Earth Day: 1. Down to Earth 2. World of Difference 3. Out of this World 4. Tree Hugger 5. Green Thumb 6. Call of Nature 7. Salt of the Earth 8. Heaven on Earth 9. Where on Earth 10. Earth Shattering.

Top 3 April Fool's Pranks

My top 3 April Fool's Pranks

Countdown!

3.  Trick 'em with food! Ask your students if they want some ice cream.  They say yes: you scream!  Well that wasn't nice so share some brownies.  Check out Teaching In The Tongass Freebie:
2.  Post a "Please Use Other Door" sign on your office door.  Obviously this will only work if you have one door like me.  I am excited to peek out my door to see staff and students pause at my door.  Grab your free sign HERE.
1.  Challenge your students to an eye-hand coordination test.  You'll need a quarter, pencil, and paper for this trick.  Ask your students to firmly trace a quarter with a pencil to make a circle on the page.  Students need to roll the quarter down their face from their forehead to chin and try to drop the quarter in the circle.  Wait until your students look up to see everyone's face covered in pencil marks, including their own!
Here's my good sport daughter who agreed to let me post this pix.  In turn I had to agree to help her trick her sisters on Wednesday.

I'm a sucker for holiday and seasonal idioms.  Here's a list of April Fool's Idioms that I'll post on my board and review.
  • Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
  • A fool and his money are soon parted.
  • Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
  • A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.
  • Fool’s paradise or Fool's gold.
Check out my post from last year HERE for another idea with a freebie.

What's in Your Cart? Linky Party. Teacher Appreciation Sale!

Thanks so much for hosting another What's in Your Cart? Linky Party.  I'm so excited and honored that Jenna at Speech Room News highlighted my Topic Text Product on her page.  The next TPT store-wide sale is coming up May 6 and 7th.

Here are some of my wish list items that I'll be purchasing during this last sale of the school year.

I'm so excited to purchase this app companion activity.  My students and I love the PlayHome Stores app and this companion will be a great addition to help focus on language goals with iPad use.

I think that this product will be perfect for my older students.  I have a lot of baseball players and problem solving and perspective taking go hand and hand with this activity.  Looking forward to downloading this!

I put this on my wish list as soon as I saw Speech Time Fun post it on her Facebook page.  What a fabulous fun way to introduce the many shades of meaning.

I have many spring themed products at my store and I thought I would highlight a few that will be on sale for 20% off.  Use the code TPTXO for an additional 10% off!

This is a comprehensive thematic product for older students who are working on higher level language functions.  There are many printable pages including black and white.  Data forms come with the pages to easily track student progress.

This is my first Life Skills focus activity on Teacherspayteachers.  I have been using it this week with my students and they are doing so well.  It is  is loaded with 160 matching cards and 20 building cards in both floor and table size, and black/white coloring pages.  Check this one out if you work with the younger population or life skills students.

Warning: Try these calendar activities and you may get hooked.  I use the activities every month and receive a lot of great feedback on them as well. My students are making steady gains and becoming more skilled at reading a calendar, sequencing, understanding temporal and spatial concepts, and following directions.

Thanks so much for supporting SLPs on Teacherspayteachers! May this sale bring you materials to make your end of the year planning a breeze.
